How to design your Home Network

Here, we are about to see how we can leverage an online tool to design our own network.

Planning your network first

So a typical home network consists of very few networking devices such as an Internet modem, wireless router, sometimes a range extender.

I have never used any tools to design my home network as it went on the flow and was experimenting with my home. However, It is important to understand the requirement before we even purchase the networking devices and I wanted to show you people, how this tool helps us to design our own network.

There are 25 wireless devices, 7 Laptops and 3 desktop computers in my home. Obviously, I am not owning it all but a few. They are connected to few wireless routers acting as access points. Monitoring these devices were a big problem. Although I have a monitoring feature inbuilt in my router, it was not good enough to see the exact result.

So, I had to implement an IDS in place and also wanted it to be an open-source application. I deployed Security Onion NSM and then for defence I deployed Sophos XG firewall Free edition. I do not have to purchase new hardware for this, Instead, I deployed them virtually and bridged the network for both the deployment.
